Machine gun made it really hard to kill enemy's that were in trenches because the machine gun could fire thousands of bullets per minute. Small teams could gun down hundreds of troops crossing open terrain. To break through trench lines, both sides began using poison gas. The Allies used Tanks also. To protect against gas attacks, troops were forced to carry gas masks.
